What is competency-based learning?
Competency-based learning is an approach to education and training that focuses on the development and demonstration of specific skills and knowledge. Instead of focusing on the traditional model of seat time and grades, competency-based learning emphasizes mastery of specific skills and competencies. Many traditional educational models are based on memorization and test preparation. Under these systems, students learn what they are supposed to know, not how to do what they know. As a result, many students stagnate and find it difficult to shift from theory to practice. Competency-based learning shifts the focus from knowledge acquisition to application and mastery.
Competencies can be defined in a variety of ways, depending on the context of the learning experience. They can be technical skills, such as the ability to code in a specific programming language, or they can be soft skills, such as communication and collaboration. Competencies can also be defined in terms of knowledge, such as understanding the principles of physics or the historical context of a particular event. In a competency-based learning model, learners progress at their own pace and demonstrate their mastery of skills and knowledge through assessments and other forms of evaluation. The emphasis is on what learners can do and the skills they can demonstrate, rather than just how long they have spent studying a particular subject or completing a certain number of assignments.
Competency-based learning is often used in vocational and technical education, as well as in workforce development programs. It is also becoming more common in higher education, as a way to better prepare students for the demands of the workforce and ensure that they have the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen careers.
How Competency-based learning is implemented?
Under competency-based learning, the goal is to minimize or eliminate drag and delay associated with various transitions between levels such as lectures and laboratory exercises. By doing so, students are able to rapidly develop knowledge in problem-solving contexts. This approach results in improved student engagement and performance.
Let’s say you are interested in pursuing a career in web development. In a competency-based learning program, you would start by identifying the specific competencies that you need to acquire to be successful in this field. These competencies might include:
- Writing HTML and CSS code
- Understanding JavaScript and its various frameworks
- Developing websites that are responsive and optimized for mobile devices
- Troubleshooting and debugging code
- Working collaboratively with team members and clients
Once you have identified these competencies, you would work through a series of learning experiences that are designed to help you acquire and demonstrate them. These might include:
- Taking online courses that focus on each competency
- Working on coding projects that require you to demonstrate your mastery of specific skills, such as building a responsive website or debugging code
- Participating in a coding boot camp or other immersive learning experience
- Completing an internship or apprenticeship with a web development company
Throughout these learning experiences, you would be assessed on your mastery of each competency. This might include completing coding challenges, taking quizzes, or presenting your work to a group of peers or instructors.
The goal of this approach is to ensure that you are not just memorizing facts or completing assignments, but that you are truly mastering the skills and knowledge that are required to be successful in your chosen field. By focusing on the development and demonstration of specific competencies, you will be better prepared for the demands of the workforce and more likely to succeed in your chosen career.
