What is Experiential Learning? Is it effective?

Experimental learning is based on the idea that individuals learn best through direct experiences, which allow them to actively engage with the material and make personal connections to what they are learning. This can involve a wide range of activities, such as conducting experiments, participating in simulations or role-plays, engaging in problem-based learning, or completing projects that require the application of new knowledge and skills.

Human beings are naturally curious. We were created with a need to explore the world around us. It’s only natural, then, that hands-on or experiential learning is a perfect way to help children become curious about the world as well. Educational psychologists say that experiential learning is more effective than other methods because it is more engaging.

The first is that some people learn better while being hands-on rather than simply listening to instructions or watching videos. In traditional learning, students are given just that ― instruction or videos. In experiential learning, students also get hands-on experience with the actual subject or topic being taught. It’s also a great way for students to feel invested in what they are learning, making it more likely that they’ll remember important information in the future since they put effort into acquiring it.

While it is true that some people are more introverted than others, there are ways to incorporate experiential learning into the classroom. This is a learn-by-doing type of teaching where students focus on building skills and solving problems at the moment. Traditional lectures are not eliminated altogether, but rather supplemented by hands-on activities and examples. After all, everyone learns differently – some prefer listening to lessons, while others need to be shown how to perform assignments in order to grasp the material.

The process of experimental learning typically involves several key stages, including:

  • Concrete experience: This is the initial stage where learners have a direct, hands-on experience with the subject matter. This could involve trying out a new skill, working on a project, or engaging in a simulation.
  • Reflective observation: After the experience, learners reflect on what they did, what happened, and how they felt about it. They may also consider how their experiences connect to prior knowledge and experiences.
  • Abstract conceptualization: In this stage, learners analyze and synthesize their experiences, identifying patterns and generalizing from their observations. They may also use this stage to connect their experiences to theories or concepts they have learned.
  • Active experimentation: Finally, learners apply their new knowledge and skills in new situations, testing their understanding and skills in practical settings.

Through this process, learners are able to construct their own knowledge and meaning, rather than simply memorizing information. This can lead to deeper understanding and more effective application of knowledge and skills.

Experiential Learning Scenario:

Let’s say a group of students is learning about the principles of physics, specifically the concept of energy transfer. Instead of just reading about it in a textbook or listening to a lecture, the teacher designs an experiment that allows students to directly experience the transfer of energy.

The experiment might involve building a simple rollercoaster, where students can observe and measure the transfer of energy as a ball travels down the track. Students would work together to build the rollercoaster, test it, and collect data on how different factors (such as height, length, or slope of the track) affect the transfer of energy.

After the experiment, students would reflect on their experience, discuss their observations, and connect their findings to the principles they’ve learned about energy transfer. They would then use this knowledge to design and build a new rollercoaster that maximizes energy transfer.

Through this process, students are able to actively engage with the material, develop a deeper understanding of the principles of physics, and apply their knowledge and skills to a practical project. They are also able to see the real-world applications of the concepts they are learning, which can make the material more relevant and interesting to them.

Can anyone adopt Experiential Learning?

Of course, experiential learning is not for everyone. It does not fit the needs of individuals who prefer or require a more structured environment, those who would be unable to problem-solve by themselves, or those needing textbook and tutor support. Still, many educational institutions are recognizing the goals, strengths, and flexibility that experiential learning offers. It also offers adults a chance to learn in a way that they are already accustomed to – on their own terms and at their own pace.

Ultimately, experiential learning is just what it sounds like: a hands-on approach to teaching, with student activity at the forefront. Teachers can take this approach by putting students in real-world scenarios, rather than always relying on a traditional lecture format. After the experience, they can then bring the students back to a more traditional classroom setting for discussion and future application of the knowledge that they have gleaned from the experience. It’s important to remember that these types of activities don’t necessarily have to be limited to an entire class period—they can be incorporated into projects or assignments that extend overtime as well.
